Uveitis & Uveal Conditions

Redness and pain that won't settle deserves more than eye drops from a pharmacy.

The uvea is the middle layer of the eye — comprising the iris, ciliary body, and choroid. Inflammation of this layer, called uveitis, causes redness, pain, light sensitivity, and blurred vision. It can be localised to one part or affect the entire uveal tract, and it can be linked to systemic conditions elsewhere in the body.

It is one of the more complex areas of eye care, and it requires careful, systematic investigation and may smoulder on for many years in spite of optimum treatment.

What We Manage

Anterior Uveitis

Inflammation of the iris and ciliary body. The most common type. Presents with redness, pain, and sensitivity to light.

Intermediate Uveitis

Inflammation of the vitreous and peripheral retina. Often in younger patients. Can be associated with sarcoidosis or MS.

Posterior Uveitis

Affects the choroid and retina. Can cause significant visual damage. Often infectious or autoimmune in origin.

Pan-Uveitis

Involves all layers. The most severe form.

Our Approach

Management begins with identifying the cause — infectious, autoimmune, or associated with a systemic condition like rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, or tuberculosis. We work with relevant specialists when needed. Treatment involves anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive medication, tailored to the type, severity, and cause.
