Intra Operative Floppy Iris Syndrome (IFIS) is a complication that occurs during the cataract surgery, among few patients. It is characterized by a flaccid iris which has a propensity to prolapse towards the incision site during surgery. The iris billows in response to intra-ocular fluid currents. It is also associated with intra operative pupil constriction despite the application of standard procedures to prevent this.
IFIS is associated with some medications prescribed for urinary problems like benign prostatic hyperplasia, eg.Prazopress (in India). Flomax (Tamsulosin) (used in USA) which works by relaxing the bladder prostatic smooth muscles. IFIS is also associated with other medications for diseases like Glaucoma, Diabetes and High Blood Pressure. IFIS may result in increased pain, a longer recovery period, and less improvement in vision than a patient with uncomplicated cataract removal.
Roshan Eye Care Hospital asks all patients to report, any medication taken. Any medication taken for Prostate Enlargement, Heart disease, Hypertension, Diabetes etc., should be mentioned.
